Legal Services Society Act , S.B.C. 2002, c. 30, s. 14

  • Nature of Interest: Lien registered against any land owned by the client or in which the client has an interest, in order to secure payment of the client’s financial obligation to the Legal Services Society.
  • Filed by or in Favour of: The Legal Services Society.
  • Effect of Registration: Creates a lien in favour of the Legal Services Society on the client’s interest in the land against which the registration is made. The lien ranks in priority to any charge registered after the lien is registered.
  • Procedure for Release: The society must execute and provide to the client a registerable discharge of the registered lien when the matter in respect of which the legal aid contract was entered into with the client is concluded, and the client’s financial obligation to the society is repaid or recovered in full.
